Why Networking is Essential for EAs (and How to Do It Without Awkward Small Talk)

Let’s get one thing straight: networking isn’t just for salespeople, executives, or job seekers.

As an EA, your network is one of your most powerful professional assets - not just for your own development, but for the value you bring to your executive and business.

And it’s not limited to industry events or professional conferences. Networking happens every day, in small conversations and simple interactions. Whether you’re chatting with a colleague in the kitchen, engaging in an online group, or responding to a LinkedIn post, every connection counts.

In your role, these relationships can become invaluable - when you need a contact, a resource, a recommendation, or just a fresh perspective from someone who’s been there.

Here’s how to build and strengthen your network without making it feel like a chore.

Everyday Conversations Matter

Some of the most impactful networking moments happen when you’re not even trying. Don’t underestimate the value of a casual chat over coffee or a quick check-in at someone’s desk. These interactions build trust, familiarity, and connection - the foundations of any good network.

For example, I once had a simple hallway conversation with a director that unexpectedly turned into a new job opportunity. It wasn’t planned, rehearsed, or strategic - it was just a real moment of connection. You never know where a chat might lead, so treat every conversation as a chance to plant a seed.

Your Reputation is Part of Your Network

Think of your network as more than just names and faces - it’s your reputation, walking around in other people’s minds. Your consistency, work ethic, and attitude stick with people long after a project ends.

Take my partner, for instance. After leaving a job, he received two calls the very next day from companies wanting to bring him on board. That didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of years of showing up, doing the work, and being someone others wanted on their team.

As an EA, your brand is built one interaction at a time. Make them count - not by being perfect, but by being reliable, professional, and human.

Online Networking Is Real Networking

Don’t overlook the power of platforms like LinkedIn. It’s not just for job hunting - it’s where professional conversations are happening. Sharing your experiences, engaging with other people’s posts, or commenting with insight can raise your visibility and position you as someone worth connecting with.

Even just following and learning from others can help you feel less alone in the role. EAs often work in isolated spaces - online networking creates a sense of community, connection, and relevance. And yes, your next opportunity might genuinely be one thoughtful comment away.

Consistency Builds Stronger Connections

Networking isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a slow build - a habit, not an event. Attending a conference is great, but what happens after you leave? Following up, staying in touch, and engaging regularly (not just when you need something) is what turns a moment into a real relationship.

You don’t need to be constantly “on,” but regular check-ins - whether that’s a LinkedIn message, a quick coffee, or even a supportive comment on a colleague’s win - go a long way.

Widen Your Circles

It’s natural to want to connect with other EAs and admin professionals. They get it - the pressure, the juggle, the role. But don’t stop there. Consider the industries you work closely with: IT, marketing, event management, legal, HR, finance - these are all areas where having connections can make your life easier and open up new ideas and opportunities.

The broader your network, the more diverse your insight - and the more value you can bring to your role.

Networking doesn’t have to be formal, forced, or fake. It’s simply about building relationships - starting conversations, sharing knowledge, and supporting others.

When you show up genuinely and consistently, people remember you. Not just as an EA who gets things done, but as someone worth recommending, supporting, and bringing along for the ride.
